Am I practicing it right? Below are the things I take note of when practicing. In no order of importance.
1) Transfer/Shifting of weight through the ground. Do not move the upper body to transfer weight.
2) Knee cap pointing same direction as feet. Especially when one foot is in front of another, the back foot keen cap is frequently pulled inwards.
3) Sole of feet flat on ground. Feel the whole sole of the feet including the toes to be in contact with the ground. Keeping knee cap in same direct as feet helps.
4) 松(Relax) 沉(Sink). The magic words. Comes with practice and feeling. This phase helps me a lot - 沉 (sink) is not 跪 (kneel). Sink does not equal to Kneel. Imagine the kneeling action, the force is at the knee cap. Your thigh muscle will be tighten. This is bad practice and will hurt the knees.
松 (Relax) the heel/ankle, small cafe muscle, back of knee, back of thigh, 胯 (kua), tail-bone in and anchored down. As you 松 (relax), the 沉(sink) will take place naturally as the channel is now open. Imagine the feeling of filling the inside of your legs with water from bottom up, At this time, there will be a downward force exerting from the sole into the ground. At the same time, there is a upward force as the water (chi) level raise up.
5) Upper body never move on its own. It moves because the waist move. But the waist does not move on its own either. It moves due to the shifting of weight, the 松 and 沉.
6) Do not drop the weight abruptly. Once 松(relax) and 沉(sink) improperly done, there will be minimum change in height.
7) The next point is abstract. Be aware but not focus of your body. To lead but not control the chi. Breath naturally, do not control breathing.
8) Do not control your thoughts but bring your thought back when it wonder off.
9) Imagine a the head is hung by a hook at the base of the skull to straighten the neck bones. Instead of tucking in the chin.
10) 虚实分明 - For most (all?) of the steps, try to archive clear substantial and in-substantial in the legs before going to the next steps. Again 虚实 is archive by 松沉.
11) Tip of tongue is always touching the upper plate of the mouth, just behind the teeth. This is to complete the circuit flow of the chi though the body.
12) The center of gravity should always be at the 丹田 area. Do not let the center of gravity raise to the upper body, then it becomes floating. Like a tree/bamboo, the lower body is trunk and root, the upper body is the branches and leaves. Archive by 松沉.
13) For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Find/feel the opposite force. It is necessary to find this opposite force, so that the Ying and Yang force is complete. Start exploring the bigger action such as 功腿 (gong).
14) Like the Taiji Symbol.
- It is round
- The bigger white area flows into the smaller black area, and vice-versa
- There is a black dot in the white area and vice-versa
How do you interpret them in the 太极 (Taiji) practice?
Below is the documented 10 Principles for practicing

First Realization
During last evening class, we managed to get our first real taste of "pushing" effortlessly.
The critical point I realized is the "song" before the "fa jin".
It had been repeatedly shown to us by Master Chow, but I guess during the early stage we are not "song" enough to have the understanding of this.
I guess the effort put in into the basic fundamental exercise pays off.
18-Dec-2013
Master Chow further emphasis the timing of the "song" and "fa jin".

Why Taiji had to be practice so slow
Ever since I took up Taiji, this question had always come across my mind.
Why Taiji had to be practice so slow?
I had gathered many answer, no right or wrong, but it does make sense.
1) Walking/Moving mediation. Practice Taiji as a form of moving mediation.
No other thoughts and no distraction, just you and your body.
2) Slowness and repetitions let your body remember the finer points sub-consciously.
Many Taiji passages talk about the body like a threaded pearl, each section connecting
to the next. It also mentioned about the mind (yi) leading the energy (chi).
Hence, though slowness and repetitions, the body remembers how it should move.
When it comes to real application, the movement may be fast, but the body moves correctly
to channel the energy (chi) to the desalinated area.

The below is a very crude translation by me :)
The autumn leaves fall and gather on the ground.
No matter how much you sweep, it gathers back.
Why not take a rest and relax,
and let the leaves falls and decompose to dust.
I do not understand what these phases mean, until my master (Master Chow)
explained to us.
The phases are used in context when doing meditation.
The autumn leaves are like the thoughts and distraction coming into your mind,
and you try to stop these thoughts like "sweeping" the autumn, whereby it will
reform again. Why not leave the thought as it is and let it turn to dust.
This describe the state of mind we should have when doing meditation.

Secret #12 - Opening the bubbling wells
During one of the practice sessions, Master Chow was commenting on one of the many secrets of Taiji.
You must open up the points at the center of your palms (劳工) and soles (泳泉).
When practicing, the chi will reach the hand and the fingers will open up (softly) like the petals of flowers. After the fingers were open, push/swell the center of the palms such that you get the feeling that the chi is bubbling/spilling out from the palms.
It is more difficult to do it on the soles, but the theory is the same.

The root of Taiji is in the feet, "force" from the leg, control by the waist, and the form take shape in the fingers (that is the chi reaches all the way to the fingers). From the feet to the leg to the waist, it must be a single continuous flow of chi. This will allow you to find the opportunity and get the upper hand. If you cannot find the opportunity and lose the upper hand, the problem is always in the waist and leg.
(松) is fluffy, is wide but not tight, is relax, is open and carefree, is not fix. It is like having small holes that can contains other matters.
The body is like pearls string up. Each pearl is like a joint/connection of the body. When moving, each pearl is move one after another. This is nature.
With practice, you will be like a tree. When the wind blows, the leaves and branches flow with the wind and yet the trunk and root is firm and stable. You will be able to react instantly to external force, every part of your body is a points, you no longer have only two hands and feet, but your whole body. After long practice, you will be like a snake. When attack on the head, the tail will react. When attack on the tail, the head will react. When attack on the center, both head and tail will react.
In the initial state of practicing, the main points to pay attention to is whether the form is accurate and if it is natural.

So I am guessing that "进退转换提擦轻" means when you are moving, either lifting

Secret #11 - Relax (松), Real and False
Relax (松 - sung), what you understand by this?
Master Chow had always try to drill into us, real sung (松) in Taiji is to relax - lengthen the tendon. This is exactly what Master Chow say. It is relaxing the tendon, not the muscle. It is the tendon that stores the "potential" energy for your body acting as the bow.

Secret #10 - Keep your feet alive during pushing hand
We learned that when practicing Taiji, we need to differentiate the substantial and in-substantial However, when we come to practice pushing hand, we always like to root out feet into the ground, giving us a sense of firmness.
Master Chow had explained to us during one of the session that rooting ourselves during pushing hand actually reduce our flexibility and restrict our reaction to opponent's force.
This require very quick changing of weight between the two legs, and at the same time, does not allow the chi to float up. (ie center of gravity remains low). All these can only be accomplished if you put in effort in the practicing the fundamentals.
Master Chow followup by demonstrating by moving a small step back or forward can bring absorb the opponent force or fa-jin. Timing is crucial, as a wrong timing means that you are giving the opponent the opening too.

Secret #9 - Let go the ego
Let go the EGO
What is the EGO, the ego in this case is "not to lose". This is the natural instinct to use force against force. This is the instinct that tells you not to let other take advantage of you, or not to be push into a disadvantage position.
In the progress in learning Taiji, the most difficult part to archive is to let go of my ego, and no, I had not reach that stage yet. You may think that you had let go, but sub-consciously you had not, because this is the natural body behavior.
As Master Chow, and many other Taiji masters, had mentioned, learn to lose.
Lose your strength and lose your ego. When you lose them, your real strength will come.
Secret #8 -
(Swallow, Spit, Float, Sink)
Last Sunday while practicing, Master Chow commented that our stances/form had no "intend".
Every stance should have an "intend", and each stance, in different situation may have different intend(s).
I used the word "intend" because I do not know of another word to use.
There are four major different "intend"(s), (Swallow, Spit, Float, Sink).
吞 (Swallow) - Swallow your opponent force
吐 (Spit) - Spit out your force (fa-jin)
浮 (Float) - Llift your opponent chi (raise the CG). The defense before the offense.
Points to note:
- The intend(s) are never tie to the stance. Same stance may have different intend depending on situation
- Intend flow from one intend to another seamlessly, as the stance changes from one to another, or as situation changes

Secret #7 - Fulcrum Point in Taiji
This week, Master Chow was talking about Fulcrum point in Taiji.
A fulcrum point is a fixed support point about which a lever pivots.
So how does this apply in Taiji.
Master Chow said that in Taiji, the fulcrum pt changes from stance to stance. Eg when 弓腿 the fulcrum is the front leg. When sit back, the fulcrum is the back leg. Even on the hand, the fulcrum can be at the wraist, elbow or shoulder etc depending on situation.
Knowing the fulcrum point is not enough, the more important thing is that fulcrum is a FIXED (定) point. And the 弓腿 should happen only after the front leg is 定. By doing this, the chi will not be dissipated and focus in the proper direction.

When practising Taiji, be aware where is the fulcrum when changing stances and make sure the fulcrum point does not move.

Chanting OM, AH and HUM sound
Following post is by Master Chow
When we are born our 72,000 meridians are open up and functioned
accordingly and efficiently. There is why the baby is serene and has a
nice smell or fragrance oozing out from the body. The baby's body
texture and skin are so smooth and beautiful. It is also soft and tender and nimble.
As the baby grows up
and is getting older, every day you find that two or more meridians
began to close up. That is why we can not find an ugly girl in this
world if she is 18 to 20 years old because the meridians are functioning efficiently.
As more and more meridians have closed up and not
functioning, the person looks older and older each year. When we reach
50 years, all kinds of pain and aches will come along. Some of us are
getting older much faster at younger age if we don't know how to take of
our body and heart.
In order to activate and open the closed
meridians, we need to chant the OM, or AH, or HUM sound every day, about
10 to 20 minutes in the morning and also before you sleep. And don't be
too smart to chant all the sounds together. You need to practice it
correctly to clear the blockages in your physical, emotional and mental
body. Make sure that the vibration moves up from the base to the whole
body and ends it on top of your head and out into the cosmic.
Not only it strengthens your immune system, it makes you look younger and also fortune will find it way to you. Good luck.
The Om sound which helps to open up 32 meridians to the crown chakra will help to open the space unlimited in your mind and enhance your wisdom.
The next mantra basic sound would be the 'AH' and the 'HUNG or HUM' sound. Using the same method of chanting the 'AH' sound by raising the vibration from the base chakra to the throat chakra, you can open the 16 meridians leading to the throat, You will find that you encounter less sickness and you will be become eloquent and you can speak and express more wisely; that means you will be become a good talker, a teacher who can propagate the dharma well and widely.

The Hung or Hum sound opens up 8 meridians to your heart
chakra. When this is open up, you become compassion and have more
loving-kindness . More joy and bliss will accompany you. You tend to be
less dualistic when you look at things. You are more generous and
helpful. In the case of having difficulties with someone or your boss in
your company, if you send this Hung or Hum sound to them, and soon
their attitude will change and will accept you more readily. This was
taught to me by my master.

Secret #6 -
Today master chow many the above 8 words to take note of when practicing Taiji
The feeling of the hand is like drawing the silk out of the cocoon. Slow and smooth. Another feeling to describe it is "Swimming in the air". You will practice to a stage whereby you can feel the resistance of the air as your hand/fingers move through the air.
The gracefulness of the cat in motion, so sure of its step. The way to practice this is back to the basic "differentiate the substantial and the in-substantial" (虚实分明)

Secret #5 - Relax (松) after every step
While doing the kata, you will notice that when you complete each step, your hand is actually "floating" and the body stiff. It is important that you relax (松) so that your hand does not "float" and the body is not stiff. Relax (松) the "kua", shoulder, elbow, waist.
Doing this also helps to bring your awareness back to you.
As Master Chow had mentioned, his master and the grand master and the great-grand master always had one word during Taiji practice, that is - 松
